Climate change is a shared regional crisis across South Asia, where ecological disruptions respect no geopolitical boundaries. From the low-lying river deltas of Bangladesh to the mountain ecosystems of the Himalayas, young people face distinct yet deeply interconnected environmental challenges. Recognizing that global climate resilience demands cross-border solidarity and collective learning, Youth Leading Climate Action (YLCA) recently completed an international learning exchange program in Punakha, Bhutan. This initiative brought YLCA delegates together with two pioneering Bhutanese youth-led organizations: Earth Guardians Bhutan CNR, based out of the College of Natural Resources, and Youth For Nature.
Set against the serene landscapes of Punakha, the exchange served as a collaborative platform for youth leaders from Bangladesh and Bhutan to reflect on community realities, analyze local climate vulnerabilities, and share actionable frameworks for grassroots activism. Through structured roundtables and interactive field sessions, delegates engaged in deep knowledge-sharing centered on sustainable agriculture, nature-based adaptation strategies, local conservation models, environmental literacy, and youth-led community mobilization. Listening directly to Bhutanese youth describe their conservation practices offered valuable technical insights into mountain ecology and community-managed forestry. Simultaneously, YLCA representatives presented their own ongoing initiatives in Bangladesh—highlighting field projects in community-based agroecology, indigenous seed conservation, youth nursery networks, and policy advocacy.
Beyond technical and strategic discussions, the program emphasized cultural exchange and inter-organizational bonding. Participants shared traditional foods, cultural stories, and personal experiences as young activists navigating the complexities of social impact work. This informal camaraderie built strong personal connections and mutual trust, turning professional networks into lasting friendships grounded in a common environmental vision.
This exchange reaffirmed YLCA’s core conviction that effective climate action must transcend national borders. When young changemakers pool their knowledge, resources, and lived experiences across countries, they strengthen regional solidarity, cultivate innovation, and multiply their collective impact. Though the physical journey in Punakha has concluded, it established a foundation for ongoing regional cooperation, collaborative research, and joint youth advocacy across the Eastern Himalayas.
